Hunter Kneppe Sentenced to Life Without Parole for the Murder of Abel Saenz

The case dates back to January 2024, when Kneppe launched an unprovoked attack on Saenz in Nampa, fatally stabbing him. After fleeing the scene, Kneppe was eventually caught at a local hospital, where he was using a fake identity to receive treatment for a defensive wound inflicted by Saenz as he fought for his life.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Haws argued against leniency, citing Kneppe’s lack of remorse and his ongoing violent behavior even while in custody. Haws revealed chilling details, including recorded jail calls in which Kneppe discussed the murder without a shred of regret, treating the crime with a disturbing level of indifference. “That’s not remorse. He wanted to kill him,” Haws told the court.

During the sentencing, Saenz’s family members gave deeply emotional statements, remembering Abel as a devoted father, a loving son, and a cherished relative. Their words painted a vivid picture of a life stolen far too soon, and their grief underscored the devastating impact of Kneppe’s actions.

While Kneppe’s defense team asked the court to allow the possibility of parole after 30 years—arguing it could motivate him to seek rehabilitation—Judge McCarthy firmly rejected the request. The judge cited the brutality of the crime, Kneppe’s continued violent behavior, and his complete lack of remorse as reasons for the life sentence. In a powerful statement, Judge McCarthy declared, “Considering the safety of the community and the need for punishment, the consequence of your choices is that you’re going to die in prison.”

Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Boyd expressed gratitude for the sentence and praised the collaboration between the Nampa Police Department and the prosecuting team. “I am especially grateful to Judge McCarthy for his thoughtful and just sentence, which ensures that Hunter Kneppe—a menace to public safety—will no longer pose a threat to our community,” Boyd said.

Corporal Matt Richardson of the Nampa Police Department also recognized the hard work that went into the investigation. He highlighted the tireless efforts of Nampa Police detectives and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Haws, who played a key role from the early stages of the case through sentencing. “The teamwork involved in this case was impressive and necessary for the outcome we saw,” Richardson said. “The work of everyone involved ensured there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Hunter Kneppe belongs behind bars for the rest of his life.”

This sentence brings a sense of closure for Saenz’s family and serves as a reminder of the importance of justice in protecting the community. While nothing can undo the pain of Abel’s loss, his loved ones can find some comfort knowing that Kneppe will never again endanger another life.
